Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick

Moved by the suffering of others, Jesus' compassion toward the sick was manifest at every turn. Christ the physician saw through to the heart of illness in the body, soul and spirit, and healed multitudes of people from every kind of infirmity, even death.

Through touch, the laying on of hands, anointing with oil, even with just a word. Jesus was able to both heal and forgive sins. He has bequeathed that healing power of love to us as his Disciples.

Through the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, we hope for both a physical healing and a spiritual healing. We receive the Holy Spirit's gifts of peace and strength of courage, and the grace to face the difficulties of serious illness, infirmity or even death.

"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders (priests) of the Church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." James 5: 14

If you are infirm due to age or serious illness, facing medical procedures, suffering severe mental or emotional stress, or facing death, please contact the Parish Office at 817-596-9585 to arrange a visit by the priest.

***
Of the Last Rites, only a priest or bishop can administer the Sacraments of Penance and Anointing of the Sick. In the absence of a priest these sacraments cannot be administered, but a lay person may give a dying person Holy Communion, which in this case is "Viaticum, the Last Sacrament of the Christian".
